Navigating through quarantine

BY: #STUKGIRL LAUREN

With almost two months of being in quarantine, for most of us, it’s been a roller coaster of emotions and confusion trying to figure out how to navigate through it all. Some people have now managed to set a routine that works for them and others are winging it, everyday. It’s me. I’m winging it…EVERYDAY. The only thing I’ve been pretty consistent with is still meditating and being active with Yoga.

Although I’m a homebody and have not really struggled with staying inside so much, I do love fresh air and natural Vitamin D. I was born and raised in LA, where we are known for good weather and decent beaches, but I currently live in DC where there’s no access to a beach or year-round good weather like home. When the weather does get good here, I absolutely take advantage of it. Don’t get me wrong, DC has nice, refreshing [all-four-seasons] weather (way better than NY where I lived, previously) but it’s hard to come by sun as frequently as I would like.

Lately, I’ve craved the freedom to enjoy outside as I normally would. I’ve found myself sitting in my window, early-mornings when the sun is at its peak, to get all the sunshine I can. This has helped increase my serotonin levels, tremendously. If you’re not familiar with serotonin, it is a natural hormone in our body that is released by the brain to boost our mood. Sunlight, certain foods and even exercise can help get your serotonin levels up.  The other hormone that is associated with happiness and satisfaction is Dopamine. When you feel motivated or achieved a goal and it makes you feel excited, that’s dopamine releasing from your brain. Writing and working on personal projects have triggered the dopamine unbeknownst to me. I’ve just recognized I feel good and feel accomplished with small goals that I’ve created and completed.

Do some research on these two hormones to find ways to naturally feel better, while being at home. Share these tips and information with friends and family who may be struggling during these times, as well. I hope you and your loved ones are staying inside and continue to stay safe! xxo
